Switzerland has entered the AI race with Apertus, a fully transparent open-source model developed by EPFL, ETH Zurich, and CSCS. Hosted on Hugging Face, the system offers 8B and 70B parameter versions trained on 15 trillion tokens across 1,800+ languages—40% of which are non-English—positioning it as a linguistically inclusive alternative to proprietary models like ChatGPT and Meta's Llama 3.
The project deliberately complies with EU copyright laws and AI ethics guidelines, mitigating regulatory risks that have plagued closed-source competitors.
